Shopping trolleys and bad knees don’t mix

Posted by peterska2 on Apr 16, 2009 in Uncategorized at 7:25 pm

It’s official, pushing a shopping trolley when you have a bad knee is not a good idea! It’s alright when the trolley is empty and you are going in a straight line. However, as soon as there is any weight in the trolley or you have to turn back on yourself it really wrecks

Having three peoples groceries in the trolley means that it gets heavy fast, and trying to shop in a packed supermarket means lots of having to turn back on yourself otherwise you can’t get out of the aisle that you are in.

The end result: By the time I got to the checkout I could barely walk with being in that much pain, so not a happy bunny. At least my car is an automatic, or I would have needed to abandon the car and get a taxi home as there is no way I would have been able to drive otherwise.

Crutches suck!

Posted by peterska2 on Apr 3, 2009 in Uncategorized at 11:33 am

Been back to the ER clinic this morning. Been told that I am stuck with the crutches until I can manage to carry my weight properly on my knee.

It turns out that not only have a torn the cartilidge but I have also strained the ligaments in my knee. I’m not surprised it is sore!

I’ve been given an appointment to go and start having physio on it but it isn’t for a couple of weeks yet. I’m just dubious about it as I’m sure I’ve had physio on it before and it didn’t make any difference. They have said though that if this doesn’t work then they may need to operate. Of course I don’t particularly like that idea either, but if it puts it right then it would be worth it.

The good news is that because my car is an automatic they said that I can drive if I feel up to it. I’m probably gonna leave it another week though before I do just to be on the safe side.

So much pain!

Posted by peterska2 on Mar 28, 2009 in Uncategorized at 5:30 am

Ouch! Ouch! Ouch! Ouch!

I must have been utterly exhausted last night as tonight the pain from my knee is keeping me awake. It didn’t bother me at all last night once I went to bed. Of course, there are never painkillers by the bed, so it has just been an expedition to go get them from the kitchen. I’m just hoping that they kick in quick or it just won’t have been worth the effort needed for getting them.

How can one little old knackered knee cause so much pain? Surely you’d think that seeing as I have been hobbling around on crutches since I left the ER that I would be in less pain as it is being rested. I know now though why they were so keen to give me painkillers up at the ER to bring home. I’m starting to regret refusing them, but I have some here that I use and I have to be careful with painkillers as I am allergic to most of them. Again not something that is particularly useful!

Well guess I should try the sleep thing again. I might just have more luck this time!

The outcome of my ER visit

Posted by peterska2 on Mar 28, 2009 in Uncategorized at 3:38 am

Well it took 3.5 hours in the ER but eventually I found out that I have torn the cartilidge in my knee. It explains why it is so damn sore! So now I’m stuck on crutches, under strict instructions to not put any weight on that leg, with an appointment to go back to the hospital next Friday morning to get it checked further.

I’m not impressed with the using crutches concept. I’m too old to be trying to learn how to to this! I’ve nearly gone flying a few times already. I’ve never had to use them before and even more strangely never known anyone that has had to use them so never tried someone elses out when I was a kid.

I guess the only plus is that I live in a ground floor flat, so no stairs to worry about. I’m not allowed to drive though even though it’s my left knee and I drive an automatic so I don’t use my left keg for driving at all. That’s a serious downer because I do like being able to just go out and having to rely on lifts is not my thing.

Gonna have to go out tomorrow though whether I gave got the hang of these darn crutches or not. Well a girl has to eat and to do that there needs to be food in the house!

Overall though, I’ll do whatever it takes to get my knee right or at least to stop it from hurting like hell like it is at the moment! I’m just gonna need a lot of practice to get the hang of the crutches. Knowing my luck, I’ll just get the hang of them when they are taken off me again!

Joy of the ER

Posted by peterska2 on Mar 27, 2009 in Uncategorized at 4:34 pm

Well I’m stuck in the ER waiting to see a doctor about my knee that I’ve done in this week. I’ve already been here for about 90 mins and I am very bored. Why does it take so long to get to see someone? Is it just that us English are too patient and so don’t complain about waiting in line for our turn?
